Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Storytellers' Club

The Storytellers' Club operates in fall and spring semesters as part of the weekly SF State Speech Language Hearing Clinic with capacity for five children between the ages of 6 to 12 years of age who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems to communicate and learn. This clinic is meant to be a supplementary service to families and children who are currently using an AAC system.

SF State graduate student clinicians and aides pair up with each child to support more proficient use of their AAC systems, language and communication development with other participants.

SF State Graduate Students collaborate and seek guidance from key stakeholders (e.g., family members) in each child's life to build goals for communication development for each individual. Each week, sessions are dedicated to individual and group therapy.

During individual sessions, SF State graduate student clinicians and aides use a variety of AAC strategies and tools to provide individual support with each child through songs, crafts, and participate in related literacy activities in both individual and group sessions. Through focus on language and building literacy skills, each child expands the use of their AAC systems to communicate and to learn. SF State Graduate Students gain skills to support young people who use AAC systems to succeed within the school curriculum through language and literacy skills.

The Storyteller’s club is not currently conducting AAC assessments or making device recommendations for funding purposes.

Participation in the AAC Storytellers' Club

AAC Storytellers are students between the ages of 6-12 years who use AAC systems that include both low and high-tech modalities.
