Project Building Bridges Summer Internship

Project Building Bridges Summer Internship: A key experience in Project Building Bridges is the completion of a summer internship in diverse cultural and linguistic settings with children with significant disabilities, their families and teachers. This summer, from July 1 to July 13, two SF State Students, Becky Matthews and Brittany Davis are participating with the Navigating Student Success in the Pacific (NSSP) Summer Institute at the College of the Marshall Islands in the Marshall Islands. They are partnering with NSSP faculty and teachers to develop assistive technology and augmentative communication tools for children with disabilities and their families. NSSP Teachers are completing courses to earn a BA degree in Education and/or an advanced teacher specialization certification in either Deaf Education or Severe Disabilities. The partnership between Project Building Bridges and NSSP provides the opportunity for SF State students to learn with teachers from the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia to serve children and their families in their home islands, languages and cultures.

From July 26 to August 11, six more students will join the NIKA Project team led by Dan Philips, M.S., CCC-SLP, to travel to Bali and Kuala Lumpur to develop communication systems with children and families in Malaysia and Indonesia in partnership with teachers, families and children in those locations.
