Information for Students Starting or Preparing for On-Campus Clinical Practica

The "on-campus" clinics are those operated by the SFSU CD Clinic and supervised by the CD faculty (including a clinic at the Mission Head Start, which is not actually located on the SFSU campus). You will be placed in a total of three on-campus clinics – two for children (CD880/CD711-C1 and CD880/CD713-C2) and one for adults (CD880/CD713-A). We offer specialty clinics for adults and both general and specialty clinics for children. Most students acquire between 35-50 child hours and 15-25 adult hours after completing on-campus clinics.

Clinical practica are opportunities for you to put your knowledge to practice. Please start by downloading the Clinician's Handbook, the Client Confidentiality and Privacy Protocol, and viewing the ASHA Code of Ethics. Read them before you begin your first clinic and use them as references throughout your clinical assignments. The handbook is your ultimate guide to the clinical experience in the CD Program. On this page are some highlights and reminders to keep you on track. You can also download clinic forms on this page.

Meet with an Advisor

It's essential that you meet with an advisor before signing up for a clinic or internship. Your advisor will work with you to make sure that you've met all the prerequisite needed and to help you request the practicum experience that will best meet your professional goals.

On-Campus Clinics Typically Offered

The sequence for clinical practica starts with three on-campus clinics. The on-campus Child Clinic options can include: General Child Language/Articulation Clinics; Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinic; AAC Child Clinic; Cesar Chavez Elementary Schoolt; or the SFSU Early Childhood Education Center/Children's Campus. The on-campus Adult Clinic options can include: AAC Adult Clinic; Neurogenics Clinic; and Accent Modification Clinic. Descriptions of these clinics are available in the Speech-Language Clinic area of our website.

Complete 25 Hours of Observation

Before you can start your first practicum, you must have completed 25 hours of observation of clinical work conducted by SLPs who hold current ASHA certification (CCC) and who can sign for your observation hours. Download the clinical observation signature form here.

Pay the $35 Lab Fee

All student clinicians enrolled in clinical practicum on campus must pay a lab fee each semester. Checks are made out to SFSU CD CLINIC and must be submitted prior to working with your client. Forms are obtained from the CD Clinic Office (Burk Hall 113) and must be submitted prior to SFSU Bursar's Office prior to you starting work with your client.

Keep Track of Your Clock Hours

Semester Clock Hours. Tracking your clock hours throughout the semester for each clinical practicum using the SC10: Clock Hours Form (downloadable in pdf or doc). Each clinician is responsible for keeping a record of his/her clock hours. At the end of each semester, the clinician completes two copies of the SC-10 Clock Hour Form. Both copies are submitted to the supervisor to be signed (ASHA number included) and submitted to the CD clinic coordinator. One copy is placed in the clinician's student file in the office, while the other copy is returned to the clinician for his/her personal records.

Cumulative Clock Hours. In addition to the clock hours forms completed for each clinic (as described above), clinicians must also maintain a Cumulative Clock Hour form (SC-12, downloadable as a pdf or doc) lists the number of hours required in each area for ASHA certification, CA licensure, and the CRS credential, so that the clinician can easily see where additionally hours are needed. Similarly, the breakdown by age group helps the clinician determine with what population he/she may need to work in order to round out their clinical experience. Two copies of the form are made and submitted to the supervisor to be initialed. One copy is kept in the clinician's student file, to be updated each semester (i.e., use the same Cumulative Clock Hours form each semester), while the other copy is retained by the clinician for his/her personal records. Each student is responsible for transferring clinical hours from SC12 to the ASHA Clinical Practicum form in their file.
